1. Independence
Day Event (14th August 2024)
The Music Vocal Department students enthusiastically
participated in the Independence Day Event held on 14 august 2024 in the
college campus. The event aimed to commemorate the nation’s independence and
celebrate the spirit of patriotism through patriotic songs and National Anthem.
2.
Workshop on Basic
Music Theory &Breathing technique during Singing Practice on 20th
August 2024
Under the direction of the
Institution's Innovation Council, the Music Vocal departments conducted a
workshop on Basic Music Theory & Breathing techniques during Singing
Practice. In addition to sharing her opinions with the students, Mrs. Anu Bala,
an Assistant Professor from the Department of Music Vocal provided theoretical
and practical expertise on the subject. The students in the Music Vocal
department thoroughly liked the two hours of enthralling instruction. She
explained that Music theory helps singers understand scales, intervals, and
chord structures. This knowledge allows singers to recognize and stay in tune
with the correct pitches. She provided knowledge of rhythm, timing, and
dynamics that helps singers interpret and express music more effectively, giving
them the ability to convey emotions and intentions.

Guest lecture on The
impact of western Music on Global Cultures on 28th August 2024
On 28th August 2024, the Department of Music Vocal organized
an insightful activity focused on exploring "The Impact of Western Music
on Global Cultures." The purpose of the event was to give participants and
students a broader knowledge of how Western music has changed and inspired
cultures around the globe. The lesson was a component of a larger educational
program designed to encourage student's appreciation of music and culture. An
introduction to the history of Western music was given at the start of the
session, covering everything from classical pieces to modern genres including pop,
rock, and hip-hop. The guest of the event was Mr. Roney George, a renowned
Music director and composer. He emphasized how Western music has changed over
time and how it influences popular music around the world.
4.
Lecture and
competition on the topic ‘Reverence and Respect of Guru Granth Sahib on 4th
September 2024.
The Department of Music Vocal and the
History Association of PCM SD College for Women, Jalandhar, organized an
insightful lecture on the topic, Guru Granth Sahib: the reverence and respect.
The lecture was delivered by Mrs. Anu Bala, an assistant professor in the
Department of Music Vocal. During the lecture, she highlighted the significance
of the music in Guru Granth Sahib. After
that, the department of music vocal held a competition on Gurbani Shabad. The
students were profoundly moved by her valuable insights and left the session
feeling enlightened and inspired. Mrs Kawaljit Kaur and Dr. Renu Bala were the
judges of the competition.
5.
Participation in
Zonal Youth Festival 24 to 26 October 2024
Students from the Department of Music Vocal from 24th
to 26th October 2024 actively participated in the Zonal Youth
Festival held at GNDU, Amritsar, showcasing their talents in a variety of
cultural and artistic competitions and got first position in B-Zone Participants
represented the institution in multiple categories, including Group Bhajan,
Light Vocal (Solo), Group Song Indian, Folk Song, western song( group) western (solo)
vaar Kawishri Geet/Ghazal. Each event highlighted the creativity & artistic
excellence of the students.
6.
Tribute to the Legend Ustad Zakir Hussain on 24th
December 2024
The
Department of Music (Vocal and Dance) organized a heartfelt tribute to the
legendary tabla maestro, Ustad Zakir Hussain, celebrating his unparalleled
contribution to Indian classical music and rhythm. The event took place on 24th
Dec.2024 at college campus and was attended by students and faculty members.
The program began with a brief introduction highlighting Ustad Zakir Hussain’s
musical journey, achievements, and his role in popularizing Indian percussion
on the global stage.
7.
Participated in 149th Harivallabh Sangeet
Sammelan on 29th Dec 2024
Students
from the Department of Music (Vocal) had the esteemed opportunity to
participate in the 149th Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan, held at Jalandhar on 29th
Dec 2024. This prestigious festival, known as one of the oldest and most
revered platforms for Indian classical music, brought together legendary
artists and young talents from across the country. The participation of our
students in this historic event was both an honor and a valuable learning
experience. They performed Saraswati Vandana and Harivallabh Vandana. The
exposure to live performances by eminent maestros and the chance to engage with
artists and peers from various institutions greatly enriched the students’
musical understanding and confidence. Their performance was well-received and
appreciated by the audience for its clarity, expression, and adherence to
tradition.
8.
Lecture cum Demonstration on Basic Aspects of Light
Music on 7 Feb 2025
The
Department of Music Vocal organized an insightful lecture-cum-demonstration on
the basic aspects of light music on 7 Feb,2025 at Music room. The session aimed
to introduce students to the fundamental elements and expressive qualities that
define light music, bridging classical techniques with popular musical forms.
The session began with a brief overview of the origin and evolution of light
music in India, including its role in films, devotional music, and contemporary
compositions. Through live demonstrations, she elaborated on key components
such as melody, rhythm, voice modulation, expression, and lyrical
interpretation. The audience was guided through examples from various genres
like bhajans, ghazals, film songs, and patriotic music.
9.
Gurbani Shabad Gayan
on 10 Feb 2025
The
Department of Music Vocal in collaboration with the Guru Nanak Study Centre,
organized a Group Song Competition to promote the teachings and philosophy of
Guru Nanak Dev Ji through the medium of music. The competition featured
enthusiastic participation from various student groups, each presenting soulful
renditions based on themes such as unity, peace, compassion, and spiritual
wisdom – core values propagated by Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The event provided a
platform for students to creatively express devotion and social messages
through group singing.
10. Participated in 150th Sathapana Diwas of Gurukul
on 25 Feburary 2025
Students of Music Vocal participated in 150th
Sathapana Diwas of Gurukul at Kartarpur and performed Patriotic song.Their
performances were met with great appreciationfrom the audience.
11.
International webinar on Divine Harmony:
Entrepreneurship on Gurbani Sangeet on 19 march 2025
The
Department of Music Vocal at PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar, under the
Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) guidance, organized an International
Webinar on ‘Divine Harmony: Entrepreneurship in Gurbani Sangeet’. It shed light
on how the sacred art of devotional music can be respectfully transformed into
career opportunities while preserving its spiritual essence. The keynote
speaker of the session was Prof. Dalbir Singh, founder of Raag Naad Academy of
Music, San Francisco, California, USA, an internationally acclaimed scholar and
practitioner in the field of Gurbani Sangeet and music entrepreneurship. The
speaker discussed various aspects, including the significance of Gurbani in
musical traditions, professional avenues in religious and spiritual music, and
strategies for aspiring musicians to establish themselves in this domain. The
Department of Music Vocal at PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar, under the
Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) guidance, organized an International
Webinar on ‘Divine Harmony: Entrepreneurship in Gurbani Sangeet’. The event
took place on a virtual platform and witnessed enthusiastic participation from
students, faculty members, researchers, and music enthusiasts from across the
globe. The webinar aimed to explore the intersection of spiritual music and
entrepreneurship, focusing on the entrepreneurial potential embedded in Gurbani
Sangeet.
12. Workshop
on Kathak on 25 March 2025
The Department of Music Vocal with collaboration of
Department of Dance successfully organized a Workshop on Kathak on 25 March
2025, aimed at enhancing students’ understanding of this classical dance form.
The session was led by Dr. Mansi Saxena a distinguished Kathak artist and
educator known for their expertise and dynamic teaching style. The workshop
focused on the fundamental techniques, including basic footwork (tatkar), hand
gestures (mudras), rhythmic patterns (taals), and expressive storytelling
(abhinaya) which are integral to Kathak. Students were given live
demonstrations and also participated in practical sessions, allowing them to
experience the discipline and grace required in Kathak.
Honour to faculty
in the Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan 29 Dec 2024
The Harivallabh
Sangeet Sammelan, one of the oldest and most revered music festivals in India,
acknowledged Mrs. Anu Bala from the Department of Music Vocal of PCM SD College
for Women Jalandhar. Her recognition at such a renowned platform is a matter of
great pride for the department and the institution.
Internship on The
Role of Rhythm in Enhancing Expressiveness in Singing on 3 April to 13 April
2025
The internship was
officially organized by the Department of Vocal Music from 3rd April to 13th
April 2025 as part of a skill enhancement initiative under the guidelines of
the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The program aimed to provide hands-on
training and in-depth understanding of the role of rhythm in enhancing
expressiveness in singing. Through structured sessions, practical
demonstrations, and performance-based activities, the internship sought to
bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application, fostering holistic
musical development among participants.
On 21st August 2024, the Department of Music Instrumental hosted an enlightening lecture titled "Introduction to Basic Tabla Rhythm," led by Mr. Krishan, an esteemed Tabla instructor from the Department of Dance at the college. The event was organized as part of the college's ongoing efforts to promote Indian classical music and provide students with opportunities to delve into traditional art forms. The lecture aimed to introduce students to the fundamental aspects of playing the Tabla, a traditional Indian percussion instrument with a significant place in Indian classical music.
ADVANCED TECHNIQUES IN SITAR PLAYING
Department of Music (Instrumental) in collaboration with the Institution’s Innovative Council of PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar, organized an insightful workshop on advanced techniques of Sitar playing on 29th August 2024. The workshop focused on various advanced techniques that significantly enhance the expressiveness and complexity of sitar playing, providing a comprehensive understanding to both budding and seasoned musicians.
STUDIO VISIT
The Department of Music (Instrumental) of PCM S.D. College for Women, Jalandhar, organized an enriching studio tour to 'Super Sonic Studios' on 27th August 2024. The students had the unique opportunity to witness a live demonstration by the studio owner, Sh. Inderjit Singh Nikku explained the intricate process of recording and creating music tracks in a professional studio environment. Adding further to the experience, Mr. Rony George, a renowned music director and composer, shared his insights on the art of music production. He elaborated on how musicians meticulously record, mix, and produce music, utilizing a blend of live instrument playing, sound engineering software, and creative collaboration with fellow artists.
The students of the Music Instrumental Department from the college participated in the Zonal Youth Festival held at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, from 24th to 26th October 2025. Representing the college in various events, such as the Folk Orchestra and Non-Percussion, the students showcased exceptional talent and dedication. Their performance in the Folk Orchestra earned them the third position. At the same time, their overall participation and achievements contributed to the college winning the Overall Trophy in the ‘B’ Division of the festival. The event provided students with a valuable platform to exhibit their musical skills and brought pride to the institution through their commendable performances.
'WORKSHOP IN COLLABORATION WITH NSS UNIT'
The Music Instrumental Department presented a lively Bollywood Orchestra performance on the occasion of the college’s 50th Anniversary celebration – ‘Roshnaaz’ Fashion Show, held on 05th April 2025. A group of talented students showcased their skills by performing a medley of classic and contemporary Bollywood compositions. The orchestra featured a harmonious blend of instruments, including sitar, keyboards, tabla, guitars, flute, and drums. Under the guidance of departmental faculty, students demonstrated remarkable coordination, rhythm, and musical expression. The performance highlighted the rich cultural essence of Indian cinema music and provided an energetic and nostalgic atmosphere. It served as a tribute to Bollywood’s musical legacy and a platform for students to exhibit their creative talents.
2023-24
2022-23
Department of Music organised a 'Devotional Music Competition' on 15th April 2023. Students of different streams participated in this competition. Harsharan Kaur, Bhumika and Harpreet recevied the first position, Preeti, Tanya and Riya got second position and Khushi got 3rd position.
Department of Music organized an International Webinar on 8th April 2023 on the topic 'The contribution of Sikh musicology to the study of Gurbani sangeet: reflections on gender and inclusivity'. Prof. Francesca Cassio from Hofstra University (New York) was the resource person of the day. She talked about the Gurbani Sangeet and the role of Women in Gurbani Sangeet.
Department of Music organized a National Webinar on 25th March 2023 on the topic 'Sitar, a popular instrument among string instruments: with special reference to Film Music'. Dr. Bhairvi, Assistant Professor, Department of Music, Government College for Girls, Cheeka was the resource person of the day. She threw considerable light on the importance and use of the Sitar instrument in Bollywood music.
Department of Music organised a 'Classical Music Competition' on 13th February 2023. Students of different classes participated in this competition. Gurdev Kaur got the first position, Darshan Kaur received the second position and Khushi Batra got the 3rd position.


Km. Gurdev and Km. Darshan Kaur of B.Com 1st Semester and B.A. 3rd Semester won 1st, and 2nd position, respectively, at the Varshik Vidyak Samelan, held at Shri Bhaini Sahib on 3rd October 2022.
Students of the Music Department participated in different items at the Zonal Youth festival held at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, from 15th November to 17th November 2022, and won various prizes. Group Bhajan won 3rd prize, Waar won 3rd prize, Folk Orchestra won 3rd prize, Western Group Song and Western Solo won 3rd prize. Students also participated in items like Geet, Classical Non-Percussion (Sitar), National Group Song, and Kavishari. Once again, the college bagged the Overall Trophy in the 'B' division.
2021-2022
To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of India’s
Freedom as Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Department of Music organized a ‘Patriotic Song Competition’ on 17th March 2022, in which about
fifteen students participated. Ankita got 1st prize, Harsharan Kaur
received 2nd prize, and Darshan, Riya, and Karishma (Group) bagged the third prize.
Department of Music orgainsed ‘Gurbani Shabad
Recitation’ on the Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji on 26th
November 2021. Students of varied streams participated in the same and gave
away their stellar performances to pay homage to the exemplary sage.
Department of Music held a teary tribute to the prodigious artist, Lata Mangeshkar, on 10th February 2022, who can certainly be no less than an institution in herself. Lata Ji’s charm was not just restricted across the nation but her rapturous strains will continue to reverberate around the world, eliciting nothing but adulation and unsurpassable glee. Members of the music department gave a singing performance to pay her homage.
To pay tribute to legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar Ji, students of the Music Department participated in the program organised by the Virsa Vihar on the occasion of International Women’s Day on 08th March 2022.
